Six Basic Principals
Popular Sovereignty People are the only source of government power Government can only govern with the consent of the governed
Limited Government Government is not ALL powerful Government can only do what the people have given it the power to do First Amendment reads, “Congress shall make no law…”
Separation of Powers Three equal branches of government Executive Legislative  Judicial
Check and Balances Each branch is subject to a number of constitutional checks by the other branches
Judicial Review The power of the courts to decide the constitutionality of a government decision A responsibility held by all federal courts and most state courts Secured by  Marbury v. Madison  1803
Federalism The division of power among a central government and several regional governments
